The Back to School season always makes me think about freshly sharpened pencils, the smell of new books, and that new school outfit. Like many writers, I’ve always loved jumping into new classes and shopping for pens and notebooks. How about you? My new notebook is ready for more stories, and my new pen makes it fun to write by hand.
The crisp scent of autumn starts a season of new beginnings as the year turns towards winter. It’s a time to refocus and reset goals and return to your writing projects.
Here at NAMW, we offer many opportunities to learn about the journey of writing your story, publishing, and marketing. Experts like Grant Faulkner—leader of National Novel Writing Month in November, Gina Frangello, Sue William Silverman, Jerry Waxler, Kay Adams, Martha Alderson, Mary McBeth, and Brooke Warner have been guests for our Member Events now offered on Zoom.
New authors and writers like you, discuss their writing journey at our monthly Virtual Book Club—also on Zoom. And our Group Coaching meetings each month invite you to gather with other memoirists and talk about your themes, challenges, and progress. You’ll get advice and support from me and the group, and make new writing buddies.
When you become a member, you have access to the downloadable audios and now videos of our events—more than 100 are in our archives. So we are going to KICKSTART our fall learning with a sale on our annual membership at the National Association of Memoir Writers!
If you’re working on your memoir, and want to learn craft, get inspired, and have accountability for your progress, please join us. We are eager to support you to get your memoir written and published.

Special Bonus: Why Tara Westover’s EDUCATED Is an Education in Memoir Writing and Staying True to Story
It’s the rare memoir that comes along and captures national attention with such intensity. Tara Westover’s Educated, published earlier this year to rave reviews, is the story of a girl born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho.
Educated is the newest coming-of-age memoir to land on the best-seller list, proving once again the appetite for stories about lives on the margins.
Class 1: The Power of Place: How to Transport Your Reader to Another Time and Place
Class 2: Imagined Scenes and Speculation: How to Write What You Didn’t Witness or Don’t Remember
Class 3: The Evolution of Characters: How to Make Readers Feel Invested in Your Story and Characters by Showing How People Change, Grow, and Decline
Class 4: Time! A Deep Dive into Where to Position Yourself in Time—Where You Are Now, Where You Were Then, and Tracking Where Your Reader Is in Relation to Where They’ve Been

Special Bonus: The Evolution of Memoir
The Evolution of Memoir takes stock of where we are now in the so-called Memoir Revolution. Due to the genre’s popularity, its evolution is perhaps a foregone conclusion. But what’s happening, and what do you need to know?
This four-week class, co-taught by memoir teachers Linda Joy Myers and Brooke Warner, is set up to be an intensive that involves a teaching, followed by generative writing. Each student will also have an opportunity to share their work and get feedback as part of the set up of class.
In these 4 weeks, we’ll explore:
Week 1: Elevating the Form
Week 2: Breaking the Time-Space Continuum
Week 3: New and Evolving Techniques
Week 4: The Meaning Below the Meaning Below the Meaning
