Why Writing Your Memoir Matters

This Labor Day weekend, I’m celebrating the blessing of being engaged in writing personal stories for over 40 years immersed in the deep insights and challenges that writing a memoir offers. Teaching memoir writing and supporting writers all these years has been a gift of deep compassion and abiding inspiration for me. It is through memoir that we become deeply connected with our fellow human beings on this path of life.

Now, memoirs are part of a significant social movement. It seems that every week more people are bravely moved to write their story. Here at the National Association of Memoir Writers we have been supporting the voices of new and experienced writers and teachers for over 18 years.

To celebrate our 18 years, we are offering new programs, classes, and community spaces for our members, and wanting to make it affordable to you by offering a Back-to-School membership sale.

Why writing your memoir now matters:

  • It’s your unique personal story, like no other.
  • Your story shares cultural and history historical eras with the world, thus widening our point of view and ability to understand others.
  • In a memoir, you reveal your struggles to overcome obstacles and how you seek healing and transformation. This inspires others to have hope, to keep writing, learning, and healing.
  • It’s also a kind of Soul Work, which offers us new purpose and clarity.

Benefits to you:

  • Claim your own voice and story
  • Exploring the past help to give you a new perspective
  • Break the silences that have imprisoned
  • According to research, writing helps to heal physically and emotionally

I hope to see you at our monthly group coaching sessions and special member events! And for the first time, at our new community platform! Stay tuned for those links when you become a member.

Memoir Revolution by Jerry Waxler

Now more than ever, our culture is hungering for a system or method to enhance mutual understanding. And the Memoir Revolution has emerged at exactly the right moment. The genre has given us permission to break the silence and get to know each other, not by skin color, religion, nationality, and other categories that separate us. Instead, we are able to tune into the deeply personal stories that draw us together.

In his book, the Memoir Revolution, Jerry Waxler, MS, LPC leads you through the powerful social trend to turn your life experience from a private collection of randomly misfiled memories into the coherent, compelling framework of a story.

The author traces the emergence of the Memoir Revolution through his own journey from rebellion and chaos in the 60s; from mysticism to computers in the 70s; and from receiving talk therapy in the 80s and 90s to providing it to others. Through extensive commentary on over 100 memoirs, self-help and fictional works, Waxler draws you into the power of this literary movement, where you can find a voice for your own life experience.

Six Tips to Improve First-person Point of View in Your Memoir

Memoirs invite readers to set themselves aside and enter the main character’s body and mind. To create that effect in your own memoir, you need to learn the techniques of First-Person Point of View (POV) Learning to speak from your own inner perspective is not just a literary task. It’s also an introspective one that changes you as you write your story. In this talk, Jerry Waxler and Linda Joy Myers offer insights that can help you strengthen your memoir at every stage of development, from your first glimmer of “what is a memoir” to your final round of edits before publication. Topics such as self-reflection, therapeutic benefits, and structure, among other topics, are presented in this deep and thoughtful presentation showing the heart of why craft matters.
