iT’S CYBER MONDAY TIME AT NAMW!

We hope you enjoyed your Thanksgiving—however you happened to celebrate it this year.

This whole year is a year of unbelievable stories—and we hope you’re taking good care of yourself and your family and friends during this strange time.

It’s a time of contemplation, of reflection about the meaning of our lives and how we can share that meaning with others. Memoir invites us to reflection upon our own lives on a deeply meaningful level—the gift that writing our story gives us.

It’s hard work, true, but so rewarding!

Here at the National Association of Memoir Writers, as we do every year, we celebrate the stories that give meaning to our lives, and offer programs and resources to help you to capture and preserve your special moments.

We love supporting you in your creative writing life to write and publish the stories that help you to offer a legacy and contribute to the conversations and insights of our times—we have to write about these times—this year especially! “Truth is stranger than fiction!”

Every year we offer deep discounts and new benefits for our members—and we hope you can join us for our programs and use our resources to help you on your journey. Read on to learn more about what we’re offering this year. And while you’re shopping, think of how you can start your story today!

Book: Song of the Plains by Linda Joy Myers

Song of the Plains is a weaving of family history that starts in the Oklahoma plains and spans over forty years as Myers combs through dusty archives, family stories, and genealogy to find out why her family was so fractured. She discovers the secrets that help to explain the wounds in her family, and the ways in which her mother and grandmother found a way not only to survive the great challenges of their eras, but to thrive despite mental illness and abuse. She discovers how decisions made long ago broke her family apart–and she makes it her life’s work to change her family story from one of abuse and loss to one of finding and creating a new story of hope, forgiveness, healing, and love.

Why Tara Westover’s EDUCATED is an Education in Memoir Writing and Staying True to Story

It’s the rare memoir that comes along and captures national attention with such intensity. Tara Westover’s Educated was published to rave reviews. It’s the story of a girl born to survivalists in the mountains of Idaho and her journey to find herself in spite of lifetime trauma and abuse. You’ll appreciate exploring the talent of writing about place, and using imagined scenes to explore the psychology of characters. All of us have to learn how to manage time in our memoir, and we teach the techniques that Tara uses to great effect.

Audio and transcript of four session course taught by Linda Joy Myers and Brooke Warner: Love Warrior

Love Warrior, by Glennon Doyle Melton, has the kind of elements of pain that most memoirists struggle to write. She grapples with addiction, painful insecurities, her husband’s infidelity, maternal overwhelm, her rocky marriage, and questions about her own lack of sex drive. Tackling a single one of these issues is tough; to expose all of them and handle them with care is enormously brave. In this free webinar, memoir experts Linda Joy Myers and Brooke Warner will address the fears that invariably come up for writers looking to write their deepest truths and expose their most intimate—and often shameful—secrets. This webinar will address the fallouts too—and touch upon how sharing your truth has a way of both leveling everything and setting you free.
