If you were moved by Inheritance, read on. If you haven’t read it yet, let this book be your fall indulgence.
This will be our fifth year of teaching our best-selling memoir series, and teaching Dani Shapiro is like a home-coming for us. We’ve long admired Dani‘s work—and this, her fifth memoir, is something to celebrate, and also a memoir all memoirists can and should learn from.
We invite you to watch a short YouTube video, a conversation between Brooke and Linda Joy about some of the things that stood out to us and moved us about Inheritance. And if you aren’t familiar with the story, check out this CBS interview featuring Dani.
We hope you’ll watch the video and join the 4-week class. Think of it as this a gift to yourself—a virtual book club that just happens to teach you to be a better memoirist.
Early bird price is $99 for all weeks. EVERYTHING IS RECORDED.

I loved this book. It arrived late on a Thursday afternoon, and I read it until I was finished. I’ve written close to 70,000 words on my memoir. But I hadn’t begun to start on what backstory to include. This area was riddled with so many emotions regarding my dad due to his alcoholism, verbal and emotional abuse and the hate and rage I felt as a child and teenager toward him. It took years to work through all the emotions and finally reach a point of forgiveness and understanding. The backstory threw me as I realized I had to write about these years in depth. Then I took an Ancestry.com DNA test and found out that this man I called dad wasn’t my birth father. Dani’s story helped me deal with all the emotions and I no longer felt alone in this experience.
Thank you, Dani, for sharing yet another story!
