For the Unmothered, it's confusion That comes on Mothers' Day. Whom should I honor? he shrugs. Mothering is more than giving birth. … [Read more...]
The MOTHER Box
Lambie Pie
After dinner earlier this evening, I settled down to my computer and was busy writing. Jim had taken our grandson, Dane, outside to his garage, and they were busy working on Jim's painting project. My female cat, Lambie Pie, started meowing loudly from the kitchen. Thinking that she was just lonely out there all by herself and assuming that we'd all left, I merely ignored her cries. Once or twice I called out to her thinking she'd realize she was not left alone and come in to join me. After … [Read more...]
A Sweet Memory
“Come on, Princess. Let’s go get some chocolate bars,” Dad suggested. It was a special treat every now and then on a hot Canadian prairie evening for just the two of us to walk to the store after supper. … [Read more...]
Time Travel
The secret of time travel is a matter of mind over time. Studying a photograph, I wing through time like Wendy and Peter Pan, flying backward through the century against a headwind to find a lost family. I reach out my arms through the decades to embrace my mother, aunt and grandmother on a spring day in 1912. … [Read more...]

Sometimes…, I still feel your eyes on me. An unexpected sound, and I know it’s you, Reminding me of something I should do. You were always amused by my scatteredness. … [Read more...]

Frozen by Karen Walker
It was 1956 when I was sexually molested by a stranger. I was seven years old. Now I am almost 60 and still dealing with the effects of that trauma. Experts say the impact sexual abuse has on a child varies, depending on the severity and longevity of the abuse. Other factors such as home environment impact the victim as well. For me, well, I became frozen inside myself, like a leaf I saw buried four feet deep in a glacier—perfectly preserved. … [Read more...]
A Land I Love

I've always know I grew up in a special place, and that the landscape and scenery comprising Los Alamos was the largest part of its magic, surpassing the intensity of its historical significance, the unique advantages of educational opportunities unavailable in most public school systems, and the feeling of physical safety living in a secured, gated community provided. … [Read more...]
The Wonder of it All
Marjorie Webb I watch with wonder my four year old grandson as he demonstrates for me that he has learned to skip. “It’s not walking, Grandma,” he explains as he gaily skips across the living room floor. “You only put one foot down and then jump to the other one, like this,” he says. He is full of such joy with his newly accomplished skill that I can’t help feeling like I want to get up and skip right along with him. I smile and admire his enthusiasm as I watch how he never seems to … [Read more...]
San Joaquin Bloom
It's February in Ripon. At the Wilma Street overpass, A wide black ribbon narrows away Curving through morning haze Toward a rose-tinted sky, disappearing Into a milky sea of almond flowers, And the fragrance of Bloom pervades. It's a magic time when girls smile, Boys tuck in their shirttails, And comb their hair. An Almond Blossom Queen is crowned. The Sunday sermon is on brotherly love. Geometric rows of gnarly brown trunks and scaffold limbs Are canopied by clouds of blushing blooms. And in … [Read more...]
