NAMW Supports Inaugural National Day on Writing

Writing memoir a perfect way to participate

[Berkley, California]—[October 19, 2009] In support of the U.S. Senate’s passing the resolution declaring October 20, 2009, as the National Day on Writing, the National Association of Memoir Writers is offering several opportunities for individuals from all walks of life to begin or continue their memoir writing efforts.

“Writing a memoir story, a personal essay, or even a journal entry about family and legacy is the perfect way for anyone to take part in the National Day on Writing,” commented Linda Joy Myers, Ph.D., MFT, President and Founder of the National Association of Memoir Writers.  “No story that can be as easily put down on paper as one’s own story, which waits to be found within the heart of the writer.  Furthermore,” continued Myers, “the art of memoir sets no expectations in terms of length, as do many other forms of writing.  The currently popular six word memoir all the way through to book length memoirs are all acceptable examples of how a memoir can be approached.”

Individuals looking for tools and resources that will help them participate in the National Day on Writing can find them on the National Association of Memoir Writers website.  A special page within the site will be open to accept submissions via blog posts of writing samples beginning at 12:01 Eastern Daylight Time on Tuesday October 20, 2009, in recognition of the National Day on Writing. The page will be found at http://www.namw.org/articles-2/write-your-story-today-write-from-the-heart/.  Additional Memoir Writing Resources are also available to the public on the site.

NAMW is also offering discounts on annual memberships and fall retreats in honor of this inaugural celebration.
